Rest is as important as work
In fitness, there has been a movement towards prioritizing rest. Rest builds muscles, rest fortifies the mind, rest allows the body to allocate resources to recovering from the physical and mental stresses of the days.
I’m usually up between 6 and 7am every morning and in the gym shortly thereafter. Lately, if my inner voice is telling my body to rest, I’ll make sure I wake later and have a slower morning. I’ll still do all my positive tasks and habits, but with an undercurrent of love and care for my body.
So, in the spirit of resting, I’ll pause my original writing at that and leave you with a resonating Haruki Murakami quote from What I Talk About When I Talk About Running:
“Hawaii is the ideal place for me to live in the summer because I can easily get lots of fresh fruits—mangoes, papayas, avocados—literally right across the street. I’m not eating these, though, simply to stave off the summer blahs, but because my body just naturally craves them. Being active every day makes it easier to hear that inner voice.”
Listening to your inner voice is a life long, and worthwhile, skill to master.
